The primary focus of the department is upon analyzing and understanding issues of educational policy in their social, historical and philosophical contexts. They attempt to provide a unique opportunity for those wishing to pursue such knowledge. They offer coursework and research experiences that deal with exploring and understanding origins, dynamics and solutions to social issues involved with schooling, both nationally and internationally. The Department offers three broad areas of concentration: Historical and Socio-Cultural Study of Education provides historical, sociological, anthropological, and comparative/ international perspectives on educational trends and issues; Higher Education focuses upon research concerning higher education policies, programs, and services, including Student Affairs; and Measurement and Evaluation focuses upon approaches to evaluating educational policies and programs, advancing critical quantitative techniques used in such evaluation settings, as well as examining the relationships among ethics and educational policy analysis.
