Department has become internationally renowned for its role in the creation of new music. The community's overlapping concerns - composition, improvisation, performance, scholarship, and technology - reveal a terrain rich in tradition but constantly expanding. Faculty and students frequently perform together in concerts, on recordings, and at national and international venues. Festivals, colloquia and distinguished visitors create a kinetic environment for collaboration and the investigation of new musical frontiers. Areas of emphasis for the M.A. include composition, computer music, critical studies/experimental practices, and performance. Ph.D. areas of emphasis include composition , computer music, and critical studies/experimental practices. The doctor of musical arts (D.M.A.) emphasis is in contemporary music performance. Highly sophisticated technology and recording facilities are available for student and faculty use. Teaching and performing opportunities are numerous.
