In this program, material engineers are civil engineers who specialize in the design, selection, specification, construction, maintenance, testing and evaluation of construction materials for various civil engineering structures. Material engineers are involved in all engineering activities of design, operation and management of engineering projects. Pavement Engineers are civil engineers who specialize in the design, construction and management of highway and airport pavements. They deal with pavement materials such as asphalt concrete mixes for flexible asphalt pavements, and Portland Cement Concrete mixes for rigid concrete pavements.

Students should possess the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor degree. They should have a minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale. International students should have the following acceptable proof of English competency: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 550 on the paper test or 79 on the internet test; IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6.5; MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) with a score of 77; UI American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) with a Level 6 Pass; U.S. Education earned degree at accredited institution or successfully completed upper-level College English composition courses (at the discretion of the Graduate Admissions Office).
