Students enter the track in August through the Indiana University School of Medicine BioMedical Gateway Program (IBMG) and take the IBMG core courses and complete three lab rotations before selecting the program and lab they will ultimately join. During the second year, students take the major anatomy core courses plus foundation courses of a minor discipline (such as physiology, biochemistry, etc). Students establish an Advisory Committee, headed by the Research Advisor at the end of their first year. This committee aids the student in preparation for the Qualifying Examination (given at the end of the second year), which typically includes the writing and presentation of a Thesis Research Proposal (extramural grant format). The Qualifying Examination has two aims: 1> to assess the student's competency in the Anatomical sub disciplines and chosen minor, and to determine if the student is prepared to begin thesis research. Upon passing the Qualifying Examination, the student is admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. The student's Committee advises the student throughout the conduct and completion of the doctoral research project, including the writing and defense of a Dissertation.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree (equivalent to U.S) with a minimum 16 years of primary plus secondary plus tertiary education and have earned a university first degree, or have completed a university first degree that grants eligibility for graduate study in a recognized university in that same country and GRE score of 779 in quantitative, 89 per cent in quantitative percentile, 567 in verbal, 76 per cent in verbal percentile, 4.0 in analytical and 37 per cent in analytical percentile. All applicants must take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in order to be considered for admissions. International applicants must have a permanent resident visa and a minimum TOEFL score of 628(paper-based version), 267 (computer-based version), 113 (Internet-based version) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 112. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken. st have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken.
