This program helps the students to conceptualize their research projects within larger rubrics that cross traditional areas of research. They attempt, in other words, to mirror and to model the innovative changes taking place in the discipline at large. The emphasis areas are intended to be flexible and suggestive, not prescriptive. They are reviewed and modified regularly by the faculty to reflect the faculty’s current and future strengths, and they place students at the forefront of methodological and theoretical change in the profession at large. Medieval and early modern studies focus on British and American literature and culture before 1800. This emphasis addresses period-specific tensions that are also germane to contemporary conditions; it invites theoretical and historical engagements with issues of genre and language, early mass culture, imperialism and slavery, social and sexual identities, and political transformations (both local and global). Students are encouraged to take courses across a very broad range of periods and geographic regions.

Students are required to complete their bachelor’s degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree, as well as high scholastic standing and suitable preparation for the intended field of study. Students should have obtained a grade point average of 3.0 or above. Students whose first language is not English and who are admitted to Michigan State University with regular admission must meet one of the following language proficiency requirements. They should have also obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on internet based test (with no sub score below 19 for reading, listening, and speaking; no writing sub score below 22) and 550 on paper based test (with no sub score below 52). An IELTS score of 6.5 or higher is also required. An average score of at least 80 to 85 with no subs score below 80 is required for Michigan State University English Language Test (MSUELT) and an average score of 83 or higher (with no sub score below 80) is required for Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).
