This program has both a Non-thesis and a Thesis option. Choice between these options is strongly dependent upon the student’s own professional and personal interests, the ability of the student and faculty member to research mutual agreement on a Masters thesis topic, and current availability of resources for conducting thesis research. Student research may involve experimental work in the laboratory or field, or may focus on theoretical or computational studies. The 30-credit requirement for a Masters degree with Environmental Engineering as the Area of Concentration is satisfied by completing Core courses (18 credits for Thesis Option; 21 credits for Non- Thesis Option) in four Tracks, with the remaining credit requirements satisfied with Electives courses. For students electing a Thesis option, up to 9 credits may be assigned for research conducted leading to a Masters Thesis. All Masters degree students are required to take four courses (12 credits) within a Track and one additional course in other Tracks (two Tracks for Thesis Option; 3 Tracks for Non-Thesis Option). Three credits of undergraduate courses (300 or 400 level) taken at Purdue University will be allowed a Plan of Study for a Masters degree. While no undergraduate course excess credits will transfer, graduate level courses will transfer if the undergraduate transcripts specifically identify them as excess credits. The School of Civil Engineering and other departments at Purdue offer additional graduate-level courses, which cover material of interest to environmental engineering graduate students.

The Division of Environmental and Ecological Engineering (DEEE). academic unit was recently launched by the College of Engineering in recognition of the strong community of faculty and students who participate in environmentally related research, educational and outreach programs at Purdue. The Division is structured to be broad and inclusive of all efforts across the College related to environmental and ecological engineering (EEE). A diverse curriculum is available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Career opportunities are expanding in the EEE field, and this reflects the reality that EEE issues are embedded in almost every societal challenge. According to a study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for environmental engineers will increase much faster than average through 2014. In addition to a large number of career opportunities, EEE practitioners may also choose from a wide variety of private and public sector organizations who value their skills. As with all disciplines and fields, EEE is evolving, and its scope has broadened. Practitioners of EEE may work in the field of pollution abatement (a multi-billion dollar market in the U.S.), in the environmental services industry (recent revenues over 225 billion domestically), or for the many private sector organizations that have recently embraced environmental sustainability. In addition, opportunities are available in government agencies and non-profit institutes. On a global scale, the opportunities are also expanding at a healthy rate.
