In this program the students must take at least three classes (9-12 hours) outside of the Department, at the 7000 level or higher. There should be written and oral exam and after passing the examination, the students should take Comprehensive Exam in the fourth semester and the written portion of the exam is a research proposal, followed by an oral defense of the proposal and after the Comprehensive Exam is successfully passed, the student can devote full attention to the required dissertation.

The applicant should have a Master's degree with a minimum of 3.0 GPA for last 2 years undergraduate work and at least a 3.20 G.P.A. in Master's-level classroom work in geology, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (verbal and quantitative - 1000, analytical - 4.0), Curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, a sample of scholarly writing and a statement of purpose clearly explaining about the interest in pursuing a graduate degree. For international students TOEFL score of at least 530 (paper-based), 197 (computer-based) or 71 (internet) is considered.

The department is having dynamic faculty who, along with their students, are making significant contributions to numerous areas of basic and applied research. This research is supported by excellent, state-of-the-art analytical facilities in the department and on campus. Manor House Apartments are available to graduate and professional students over the age of 21 without children. Students can apply to live in one of 38 studio apartments, 6 one-bedroom apartments and 29 two-bedroom apartments. At Manor House students have all the advantages of living on campus with the privacy of an apartment and the convenience of being near downtown Columbia. Each apartment contains a kitchen unit with an electric range, refrigerator, and garbage disposal. Apartments are carpeted and unfurnished. The monthly rental rate includes water, sewer, gas, basic cable, and local phone bills. Apartments are individually metered, enabling residents to make their own arrangements with utility companies. The resident pays the electric bill. University Heights, University Terrace, and University Village Apartment complexes offer safe, affordable, and family-friendly housing for students with families and a limited number of single graduate students. Although floor plans vary, all apartments include living room, kitchen, bath, and one or two bedrooms. All are unfurnished except for stoves and refrigerators.
