This program is designed to prepare the student for research or faculty position in the materials field. The program is multidisciplinary and involves the departments of physics and astronomy, chemistry and biochemistry, electrical and computer engineering, and MME, with MME as the administering department. The programs reflect the multidisciplinary nature by providing a thorough grounding in each of the basic disciplines of the field. Depth in specialized areas is achieved through the research interests of faculty in each of the participating departments. With an increasing number of technological fields becoming materials limited in various ways, the program seeks to prepare students to meet the challenges of property improvement and new materials development, with a broad-based curriculum that stresses fundamentals.

The program modules are as follows: CHEM 3320 Structure and Energetic II (3 QH), CHEM 3620 Physical Chemistry II (3 QH), ENEE 4035 Nanophotonics (4 QH), ENGR 3630 Finite Element Methods (4 QH), ENGR 4200 Introduction to Nanotechnology (4 QH), ENGR 4210 Introduction to Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (4 QH), ENME 4310 Computational Methods for Mechanics and Materials (4 QH), MTSC 4010 Mechanical Behavior of Materials (4 QH), MTSC 4020 Composite Materials I (4 QH), PHYS 4411/PHYS 4112 Advanced Condensed Matter Physics I/II (3 QH each).

Students should have a bachelor degree in computer, electrical, mechanical engineering or closely related areas. Students with B.S. degrees in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering science, electrical or mechanical engineering technology, engineering physics or similar B.S. degrees may also be admitted. They should have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper based) or 80 (internet based) or and IELTS score of 6.0 or higher. In addition to this, GRE scores are also required.
