This program is available to students holding BS engineering degrees from ABET-accredited undergraduate programs or their foreign equivalents, which lead to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy with a major in Mechanical Engineering. Areas of particular academic and research interest include: mechanical systems, air breathing, rocket and futuristic flight propulsion systems, heat and mass transfer, classical and statistical thermodynamics, energy conversion systems, mechanical vibration, materials, and structures. Study in each of these areas usually involves a combination of analysis, computer modeling and experimental approaches. The primary goals of the program are to provide the student with a strong background in mechanical engineering sciences and practice, and to involve the student in an environment representative of current research and development activity.

Students majoring in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering may not normally use more than one 400-level engineering course to meet their advanced degree requirements. For students majoring in engineering science, 400-level courses in engineering may be used for graduate credit at the discretion of the advising committee. However, at least two-thirds of minimum required credit hours in a master's degree program must be at or above the 500 level. Every student whose native language is not English must submit official scores from either the TOEFL test or the IELTS test taken within the last two years or have received a degree from an accredited U.S. Institution within the past two years. Minimum acceptable TOEFL score is: 550 on the pen and paper test, 213 the computer-based (CBT), or 80 on internet based test (iBT). Minimum acceptable score on the IELTS test is 6.5. GRE is required for Graduate Research Assistantships in all departments. The University will not enroll any student who has not been approved initially or for transfer by the Immigration and Naturalization (INS) to attend UTSI. An international student may not enroll as a probationary or non-degree student.
