This program is administered jointly with the Purdue University School of Mechanical Engineering, West Lafayette, Indiana. All students take a qualifying examination that covers core courses. This written examination is part of the information used for evaluating a student's potential for completing the Ph.D. program. All Ph.D. students take a preliminary examination that includes an oral part and a written thesis proposal. The purpose of the preliminary examination is to determine if the student is adequately prepared to conceive and undertake a suitable research topic. After the successful completion of the preliminary examination, the thesis research may be conducted under supervision of a mechanical engineering faculty member. Students can specialize in any of the following areas : acoustics, fluid mechanics, applied optics heat transfer, automatic controls, manufacturing and materials processing, automation, noise control and vibrations, bioengineering, propulsion, combustion theoretical, and applied mechanics, design (CAD, ROBOTICS), transportation, and environmental control (HVAC and R).

Applicants must have a Master of Science degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited institution with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale and a GRE verbal score of at least 570. Superior students with only a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline may also be admitted under some circumstances. International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based version), 213 (computer-based version), total score 79 (Internet-based version) with writing score of 18, speaking score of 18, listening score of 14, reading score of 19 or an IELTS score of 6.0 or successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 112. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken.
