The purpose of the program is to educate and nurture scholars who are prepared for leadership roles in applied research and in the dissemination of research knowledge through teaching and direct assistance in the building and construction industry. It is designed for individuals who are interested in acquiring the knowledge and skills that are needed to conduct substantive, innovative, and original research that contribute to the theoretical and methodological foundation of architecture and interior design, and the dissemination of this research through teaching, publication, and practice. To this end, the curriculum is structured so that students move gradually from overview of architectural research to the identification and pursuit of major and minor areas of specialization and, finally, to highly specialized original dissertation research.

The applicant should have a Master's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (A=4.0) in the undergraduate work, a minimum GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and the personal statement of academic and professional objectives. International students should submit scores of 550 in the TOEFL exam.
