The Department of Industrial Engineering mission is to produce engineering graduates that are prepared to pursue careers in their chosen field while meeting the industrial engineering needs of industry, business, healthcare and government. The graduates will be prepared and motivated to continue learning throughout their career, and gain the knowledge and skills to contribute significantly to society. Specific elements to achieve this mission are to recruit and retain highly qualified students, to pursue resources necessary to recruit and retain the best faculty, and to develop a dynamic and structured curriculum to meet the needs of constituents.

The University has on campus housing which is maintained by Residential Life and Housing. The residential halls include Moody Towers, Quadrangle, Cougar Place and some privately owned halls are Cullen Oaks and Bayou Oaks. The student housing ranges from traditional single or double dorm rooms to suite-style halls to fully furnished on-campus apartments. All facilities are equipped with up-to-date amenities including cable TV and Ethernet connectivity. Apartment options also have kitchens. Meal plans are flexible and students can choose a weekly or semester meal allowance. The university offers world-class exercise equipment and facilities for an assortment of recreational activities. It is a great place to indulge the senses with a performance or an art exhibit. Stages on campus host dance, musical, and theatrical performances throughout the year. Students have a variety of options for parking on campus. In addition, several METRO bus routes serve the campus. METRO Van Pool services are also available for students who would like to get to know other commuters on the way to school.
