The mission of the PhD program is to train future leaders and the next generation of scientists in epidemiologic research. Graduates of the program will seek careers in academia and other research settings. The purpose of the PhD program is to prepare students for a career in epidemiologic research and teaching, usually in an academic setting. The PhD graduate is expected to have knowledge across a wide range of epidemiologic theory and methods as well as sustained experience in the conduct of research in one or more content areas. At the completion of the DrPH program in Epidemiology students will be able to discuss major epidemiologic public health problems and controversies; demonstrate expertise in at least one content area of epidemiology; exhibit proficiency in epidemiologic surveillance, program design and evaluation; conduct ethical and scientifically sound applied research; demonstrate leadership and professionalism of written and oral skills for communicating with different audiences in the context of public health; appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of public health.

Students should hold a master's degree in Public Health, Master of Science in Public Health or equivalent, GRE score of 1200 minimum, 3 references, GPA of at least 3.5/4.0 for graduate coursework. For those students applying to the program where English is not a required language, TOEFL exam scores must be submitted. The minimum expected scores are: taken by paper: 570-573; taken by internet: 88/89; taken by computer: 230.
