This program provides knowledge, insight and skills that students need to make profound contributions as independent scientists, as well as to achieve prominent roles in academia, government and industry; a learning environment that is nurturing, intellectually challenging and personally rewarding; an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and diverse faculty, who have made significant contributions in their fields of expertise; and a modern, state-of-the-art facilities that support a breadth of research interests and valuable hands-on experience. The program consists of course work which presents the basic principles of medical biology, pharmacology and toxicology, and training in research and the scientific method. It is important that each student has the opportunity to reach their individual potential pursuing the research that is important to them.

The modules include BMB 801 - Molecular Biology (3 credits); BMB 802 - Metabolic Regulation and Signal Transduction (3 credits); PHM 827 - Physiology and Pharmacology of Excitable Cells (4 credits); PSL 828 - Cellular and Integrative Physiology (4 credits); PHM 819 - Principles of Drug-Tissue Interactions (2 credits); PHM 820 - Cellular, Molecular and Integrated Systems Pharmacology and Toxicology (4 credits); PHM 830 - Experimental Design and Data Analysis (3 credits); PHM 870 - Research Rotation (2 credits); PHM 910 - Seminar Discussions of Current Topics (1 credit); PHM 980 - Problems (2-5 credits) ; PHM 999 - Doctoral dissertation research (24 credits total, required to graduate); PHM 804 - Molecular and Developmental Neurobiology (3 credits; PHM 806 - Advanced Neuroscience Techniques Laboratory (3-9 credits); PHM 810 - Synaptic Transmission (3 credits); PHM 813 - Cardiovascular Pharmacology (3 credits); PHM 816 - Integrative Toxicology (3 credits); PHM 839 - Systems Neuroscience (4 credits).

Students are required to complete their bachelor’s degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree, as well as high scholastic standing and suitable preparation for the intended field of study. Students should have obtained a grade point average of 3.0 or above. Students whose first language is not English and who are admitted to Michigan State University with regular admission must meet one of the following language proficiency requirements. They should have also obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on internet based test (with no sub score below 19 for reading, listening, and speaking; no writing sub score below 22) and 550 on paper based test (with no sub score below 52). An IELTS score of 6.5 or higher is also required. An average score of at least 80 to 85 with no subs score below 80 is required for Michigan State University English Language Test (MSUELT) and an average score of 83 or higher (with no sub score below 80) is required for Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).
