This program is the study of legal institutions and law from the perspective of political science. Since politics is about the authoritative allocation of values, law and legal institutions are central to politics. The study of law and politics in this country has largely centered on the American experience and is committed to the multiple areas of substantive interest that constitute the field today, as well as the methodological diversity that characterizes the discipline of Political Science.

All applicants are required to take the GRE general test, scores must be less than 5 years old at the time they are submitted. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of any student whose native language is not English. TOEFL scores submitted by ETS can be no older than 2 years old. Academic transcripts (undergraduate and graduate), letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and writing sample are required.

The Department is distinguished by the breadth and quality of its faculty, students, and curriculum. It is the largest department in the College of Liberal Arts and is home to 2200 majors and 115 Ph.D. students. Nationally recognized for its quality, the Department has fifty professors, a dozen joint and emeritus professors, ten lecturers, and more than fifty teaching assistants. The Department houses the Public Policy Institute research unit.

On-campus housing can hold more than 7,100 students. Jester Center is the largest residence hall with its capacity of 2,945. Academic enrollment exceeds the capacity of on-campus housing; as a result, most students must live in private residence halls, housing cooperatives, apartments, or with Greek organizations and other off-campus residences. The Division of Housing and Food Service, which already has the largest market share of 7,000 of the estimated 27,000 beds in the campus area, plans to expand to 9,000 beds in the near future.
