This is a school wide degree and the highest professional degree for the public health generalist. Students are expected to focus on public health practice and to acquire broad knowledge related to professional skills. The dissertation is of an applied, practical, problem-solving nature and must demonstrate ability for independent investigation. Environmental Health Sciences is one of the areas of specialization.

Applicants must have masters or MPH degree from an accredicted institution. Admission Requirements: Satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) within 5 years of the date of application. The applicant will submit official copies of the three GRE scores. There is not a minimum combined score requirement. As a guideline the average scores for all admitted applicants to the School of Public Health over the last three years were: Verbal: 550; Quantitative: 672; and Analytical Writing:, 4.0. The averages are generally higher for successful admission into the doctoral program (In lieu of GRE scores, Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores are accepted for applicants already holding an M.D. or D.D.S. degrees); Applicants should have a graduate GPA of at least 3.5. The undergraduate GPA may be less than 3.0 if the applicant has a graduate GPA of at least 3.5; Applicants without graduate degrees in fields related to environmental health sciences (“direct-entry applicants”) should have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, biology, biochemistry, engineering, or other appropriate field related to environmental health sciences. The following course prerequisites are required: at least one year in each of chemistry (including organic chemistry or biochemistry), physics, biology, and mathematics containing calculus. Exceptional applicants may be admitted conditional to successful completion of these prerequisites in the first year of enrollment in the Department, or these prerequisites can be waived by a majority vote of the Admissions Committee; Applicants whose undergraduate degree is from an institution whose primary language of instruction is not English must submit official scores of 580 (paper and pencil test) or 237 (computer-based test) in the TOEFL, or an overall band score of 7.0 on the IELTS.
