This program prepares students for leadership roles in the information professions and as information specialists in a variety of other roles in private and public agencies. The Department of Health Studies, College of Health Sciences, prepares students for leaderships positions in the disciplines of health education and health promotion. Students learn to assess the health needs of populations; plan, design, implement and evaluate health education programs; and serve as resource persons for health-related information. Students who pursue this dual program will attain two degrees: Master of Library Science and Master of Science in Health Studies. Graduates of the program will possess specialized combination of expertise and be prepared to address social needs stemming from the rapid evolution of information technologies in our versatile job market and information profession. They will also contribute to the resolution of conflicts relating to health policy.

The program modules include Library Science courses (21 total hours): LS 5083 Foundations of Library and Information Studies; LS 5013 Information Organization and Retrieval; LS 5043 Information and Communication Technology; LS 5003 Collection Development; LS 5363 Health Sciences Information Resources (replace LS 5383);LS 5473 Health Reference Information Sources and Services (replace LS 5263);LS 5483 Consumer Health Information Resources; Health Studies courses (24 total hours): HS 5413 Current Issues in Health Studies; HS 5353 Epidemiology; HS 6443 Foundations of Health Science; HS 5423 Ethnic and Cultural Factors in Health Decisions; HS 6453 Strategies in Health Education Delivery; HS 5383 Program Development and Coordination; HS 5013 Data Collection; One Health Studies elective course - 3 hours; Additional Dual Degree Requirements-9 hours: Graduate level statistics course (3 hours);HS 5023 Methods in Health Education Research; LS 5843 Practicum; Final Exams for the Degrees: Health Studies: HS 5383 Program Development and Coordination; Library Science: Final Examination Portfolio.

Students should have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 undergraduate hours. International students, whose native language is not English, must demonstrate English language proficiency by obtaining minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper - based) or 213 (computer - based) or 79 (internet - based) or on the International English Language Test Service (IELTS) an overall band score of 6.5; or on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) an overall score of 80 as evidence of English language proficiency is required. GRE is preferred.
