This program is intended for experienced counselors holding a professional job in the field and interested in improving their practice and advancing in their career. Since it meets all the requirements of this traditional program, it is CACREP accredited.

Program Core (27 credits): EDU 565 Research in Life Course Studies; EDU 552 Counselor Education; EDU 553 Counselor Supervision; EDU 554 Advanced Theory, Research and Practice in Group Work; EDU 555 Advanced Counseling Theory, Research and Practice; EDU 563 Advocacy, Consulting, and System Change as Counseling Practice; EDU 564 Contemporary Trends in Mental Health, Appraisal, Intervention and Research. Choose one course in psychological processes in human development; eligible courses include: EDU 560 Research in Cognitive Development; EDU 549 Contemporary Learning Theories; EDU 572 Development of Selves. Choose one course in education and human development in social context; eligible courses include: ED 573 Developmental Interventions in Community Settings; ED 577 The Biology of Human Development: Principles, Practices and Politics; ED 418 The Family and Social Dynamics; ED 481 School, Family and Community Relations; ED 412 Sociology of Education; ED 410 History of American Education; ED 411 Philosophy of Education; ED 417 Education of American Women: A Social and Cultural History; ED 425 Minority Youth Development in Urban Contexts. Students also need to register each semester of their first two years in a non-credit bearing “cohort seminar” intended to support their progress in the program (ED 561 Counseling and Human Development Cohort Seminar).

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in counseling or a related field from an accredited institution or equivalent by the time they enter the program. Applicants are strongly recommended to have had at least two years of experience as a professional counselor beyond entry-level practica and internships. Applicants should have the ability to do doctoral level work at the University of Rochester, as demonstrated by their past academic performance, writing skills, and technological literacy and expertise. Applicants’ career goals, objectives, and attitudes should be consistent with the Warner School counseling program to which they are applying and the stated mission of the program. Applicants should demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills and sufficient maturity, self-awareness and emotional stability to serve clients well in counseling settings and to serve counselors-in-training well in instructional and supervisory settings. Applicants should demonstrate openness to self-examination and personal and professional self-development. Applicants should demonstrate potential for professional leadership and advocacy.
