This program is intended for experienced practitioners in areas related to human development who are interested in improving their practice and advancing in their career.

Program Core (18 credits) : EDU 571 Applied Probems in Human Development; EDU 429 Theories of Human Development; EDU 565 Research in Life Course Studies; EDU 549 Contemporary Learning Theories. Choose two of the following selected human development courses: EDU 560 Research in Cognitive Development; EDU 572 Development of Selves; EDU 573 Developmental Interventions in Community Settings; EDU 577 The Biology of Human Development: Principles, Practices and Politcs. Students also need to register each semester of their first two years in a non-credit bearing “cohort seminar” intended to support their progress in the program (ED 561 Counseling and Human Development Cohort Seminar). Applicants should hold a master’s degree in counseling or a related field from an accredited institution or equivalent by the time they enter the program. Applicants are strongly recommended to have had at least two years of experience as a professional counselor beyond entry-level practica and internships. Applicants should have the ability to do doctoral level work at the University of Rochester, as demonstrated by their past academic performance, writing skills, and technological literacy and expertise. Applicants’ career goals, objectives, and attitudes should be consistent with the Warner School counseling program to which they are applying and the stated mission of the program. Applicants should demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills and sufficient maturity, self-awareness and emotional stability to serve clients well in counseling settings and to serve counselors-in-training well in instructional and supervisory settings. Applicants should demonstrate openness to self-examination and personal and professional self-development. Applicants should demonstrate potential for professional leadership and advocacy.
