Students admitted to the University Honors Program (UHP) must fulfill UHP requirements in addition to degree program requirements. Honors courses used to fulfill degree program requirements will also fulfill UHP requirements. Honors students complete an honors thesis project in the final year, most often in conjunction with an honors thesis course, or with an honors directed studies or honors directed research course. Students select honors courses and plan for a thesis project in consultation with their UHP adviser and their departmental faculty adviser. As part of their honors program, CFANS students complete CFAN 3100H; they must submit their project for this faculty mentored honors experience to the honors committee for approval prior to registration.

Students must have completed the coursework through high school graduation. They are expected to complete, at a minimum, the University's core subject requirements such as four years of English with an emphasis on writing, including instruction in reading and speaking skills and in literary understanding and appreciation; three years of mathematics including one year each of elementary algebra, geometry, and intermediate algebra; three years of science including one year each of biological and physical science, and including a laboratory experience; three years of social studies including one year each of U.S. history and geography; two years of a single second language; and one year of visual and/or performing arts including instruction in the history and interpretation of the art form. Individual circumstances are also considered as part of the overall assessment of each application and may factor into individual decisions. Students should have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 550 in paper based 79 for internet based, 6.5 for IELTS, and 80 for MELAB. If students have taken the ACT exam and scored 17 or lower on the English or reading section (or SAT critical reading [verbal] score of 420 or lower) need to provide English language scores.

The Department of Forest Resources is committed to providing quality education, research and outreach in the areas of forest and related natural resource management. They remain a leader in the field and continue to advance solution-driven science that informs the conservation, protection and use of these resources. The mission is to advance the science and management of forest and related natural resources, to develop the next practitioners and leaders in these areas through undergraduate and graduate education, and to serve the citizens of the state and beyond through broad based outreach. They have played a consistent and key role in connecting Minnesota’s natural resources interests, fostering productive and sustainable forest resources management, and meeting new challenges in the areas of research. They foster solution driven science to understand of physical, ecological, economic, and social systems function and interact and to use this information to address problems and opportunities for society. The efforts address the interrelatedness of physical and ecological systems (e.g., ecosystem health and productivity, climate change), new technologies (e.g., renewable energy), and the economic, communication, and policy issues and solutions associated with these areas.

The University provides housing and living learning opportunities on or near campus. The mission encompasses goals in three areas create individual student living/learning environments, enhance opportunities for commuter student housing and provide housing for students with families, faculty, and visitors. Housing and Residential Life, in coordination with the university police, work to provide a safe and healthy living environment for the student. The University offers eight residential halls and three apartment buildings. The amenities provided in all the residential halls and the apartments are air conditioning, carpeting, dining facilities within hall, card access main entry and resident areas; closet or wardrobe (expanded spaces may have clothes rack), community kitchen, computer lab, dresser, desk and chair (expanded spaces may have tables), Ethernet connection, extra-long twin bed and mattress pad, fee-for-service cable TV, health advocates (student health advisors), ice machines, laundry facilities, local telephone service (phones not provided), lounges, maintenance staff (full time), meeting space, music/piano practice rooms, nightly security monitors, smoke detectors and sprinklers, sports and recreational equipment, games, vacuums, and DVDs available for check out at information desk, study rooms, vending area and window coverings. Yudof Hall apartment, Roy Wilkins Hall and University Village offers different types of room types. University Dining Services has six residential restaurants and offers convenient and flexible meal plans perfect for students, staff or faculty who have a valid university ID. It serves up a changing menu of specialties including pizza, Asian stir-fry, vegetarian selections and American entrees. Each residential restaurant has operating hours and menus based on the needs of their community. A full menu service is offered during the breakfast, lunch/brunch, and dinner meal periods.
