The joint major is an integrated program consisting of 45 credits of interdisciplinary study in the history, literature, culture, and language of France and French-speaking regions. The program is administered jointly by the Departments of History and French, and students should obtain advising and program approval from the undergraduate director in either department.

Applicants who studied in Indian schools are requested to submit the Higher Secondary Certificate and Secondary School Certificate. Those who have studied are requested to submit Hong Kong Certificate of Education and/or British GCE "O" and or "A" Level exams, and Pakistan students are requested to submit 10th and 12th grade mark sheets (Matriculation and Intermediate Certificate). Applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the US in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of US residency status, are requested to take TOEFL, IELTS and MELAB (Michigan English Assessment Battery). Acceptable TOEFL scores are 550+ on the paper and pencil test or 79+ on the Internet-based test. A score of 7 or higher on either the academic paper and pencil test or the academic computer-based test in IELTS is acceptable for admission. The minimum required MELAB score is 82.

The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is the undergraduate school for liberal arts and sciences on the Rutgers–New Brunswick/Piscataway campus. The university provides both on-campus and off-campus housing. In off-campus rooms are usually unfurnished singles (rooms for one person) or doubles (rooms for two people), and a great number are within walking distance of a campus. The common areas of the unit-as well as the household responsibilities-are usually shared by all tenants. Rooms in Private Homes are rooms in owner-occupied apartments or houses. They are usually furnished and generally include partial or all utility charges in the monthly rent. Rooms in private homes do not always include kitchen privileges, and few are available within walking distance of a campus. Most are in surrounding municipalities. In on-campus housing student residence halls provide the following equipment and facilities. In the rooms: A bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet for each student, window coverings (drapes or blinds), and smoke detector. In the buildings (most residences have these facilities in the building): Laundry. Lounge (many with TV). Study area. Kitchen or kitchenette (many with microwaves). Food and beverage vending machines. Conveniently nearby on each campus: dining hall(s), library computer lab(s), recreational center (Busch, College Avenue, and Cook offer swimming pools), campus activities center, numerous bus stops, public pay phones.
