The Public Interest Law area of concentration provides education for public interest and public sector careers, as well as an overview of various ways lawyers can advance the interests of the poor, disabled, consumers, elderly, and others who lack equal access to the legal system on some of the most pressing social issues of our times. These issues profoundly affect the lives of individuals, the growth of social institutions, the substance of culture, and the workings of political economies.

Students with U.S. bachelors degrees or equivalent degrees from institutions of recognized standing in other countries may apply for admission to Graduate Studies. Assessment of a foreign degree is based on the characteristics of the national system of education, the type of institution attended, and the level of studies completed. Graduate Studies requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if native language is not English or instruction has not been in English. The minimum score required for admission to graduate study at UC Davis is 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 68 for the Internet-based test and IELTS overall BAND score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.
