This graduate program effectively combines academic and clinical endeavors to prepare students to become speech-language pathologists. The program places a major emphasis on the development of clinical skills, although students have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of academic and research activities as well. The curriculum, which is based on five semesters of study, is accredited by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

Students must have a four-year undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders or speech-language pathology and/or audiology from an American university with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Undergraduate degrees in Communication Disorders from foreign universities are also accepted, as long as they are equivalent to a four-year American university baccalaureate degree in Communication Disorders. Three letters of recommendation evaluating the applicant's scholarship and clinical skills are required. At least two letters should be from academic faculty familiar with applicant. A personal statement of the applicant's short- and long-term goals is required. A minimum TOEFL score of 80 is required for international students.

The mission of the Department of Communication Sciences AND Disorders (CSD) is to prepare undergraduate and graduate professional personnel in the delivery of clinical services to individuals requiring supportive patient care. This mission is accomplished through utilization of a clinical training model in which skills and competencies of concern include those related to prevention, assessment, habilitation, and rehabilitation of disease or disorder. In addition, the CSD department accepts an obligation to give particular attention to the clinical health care needs of the region in its research, outreach, and service programs in communication disorders.

The Office of Residence Life believes that campus living is integral to a student's educational experience. The purpose of residence life is to promote community development and personal growth. In choosing to live on campus, a student-resident commits to participate as a positive citizen in an educational community; a community characterized by respect, responsibility and opportunity. A variety of furnished housing is available at UMD for students who wish to live in University residence halls and apartments. The University offers housing to 1,564 students in traditional residence halls and 1,455 students in apartment-style units. Residence Hall rooms are furnished with beds and mattresses, draperies, desks, chairs, drawer space, study lamps, wastebaskets, compact refrigerator, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Almost all rooms in the residence halls are designed for two students. Students living in the residence halls must provide their own bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow cases, blankets and bedspreads). Apartment units are furnished with refrigerator, stove, couch and chair, end table, dining table and chairs, beds and mattresses, desks, chairs, dressers, desk lamps, shower curtain, draperies, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service, and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Students living in the University apartment s must provide their own cooking and eating utensils, wastebaskets, and bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow case, blanket and bedspread). Each apartment is designed for four students.
