This program is open to students enrolled in the M.D. degree program. Prerequisites are the same as for the Ph.D. program. Students normally enter the M.D./Ph.D. program after completion of the basic medical science curriculum. Depending on their backgrounds in biochemistry and related sciences, students may begin early, such as the summer session before or during medical school. The course requirements are the same as for the Ph.D., except that the student’s committee may exempt him or her from BCHM 805. In case of Ph.D. to pursue graduate study, students must meet requirements for admission to graduate studies. Students also should have completed mathematics through calculus (two semesters), general and analytical chemistry, organic chemistry (8 to 10 semester credit hours, lecture and laboratory) and two semesters of physics. Applicants should take the general aptitude and advanced sections of the Graduate Record Examination. It is possible to make up some course deficiencies in the first year of graduate study.
