This program combines research in the biology of cancer with a curriculum that challenges trainees to consider how their research may be translated into improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Despite progress in elucidating mechanisms underlying human cancer, further basic understanding is required. At the same time, increased efforts are needed to translate increasing mechanistic knowledge into improved diagnostic, preventive, and treatment modalities. It is to develop a cadre of highly selected and committed scientists, skilled in molecular and cellular biology, who will pursue long-term careers in cancer research. Themes include cancer gene signaling pathways, development and differentiation, invasion and metastasis, as well as disease focuses including breast, prostate cancer, leukemia, and melanoma and also trains investigators in approaches aimed at translation research advances to the clinic. This involves advanced course work in both basic and clinical cancer biology.

The modules for first year are G300 Core I: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, G310 Laboratory Rotation, G312 Responsible Conduct of Research, G315 Introduction to Journal Club, G320 Biostatistics, G591 Dean's Lecture Series, G305 Core II: Cell and Developmental Biology, Core III: Concepts in Cancer Biology, G311 Laboratory Rotation, G316 Introduction to Journal Club II, G395 Methods in the Biomedical Sciences, G592 Dean's Lecture Series. Modules for second year are Advanced Topics in Tumor Biology, G625 Advanced Topics in Cancer Biology, G800 Independent Research, Cancer Biology Work in Progress (Cancer Club), Journal Club in Cancer Biology, Oncological Sciences Seminar Series.

Students must submit application form and by submitting the research-oriented MD/PhD online application form. They must have had research experience and should have taken advanced courses in science (e.g., physical chemistry, genetics, biochemistry). The MD/PhD application form is the only written material which must be submitted in addition to the application materials to the Medical School. They must submit 3 letters of recommendation from research advisors and GRE scores. Based on the application materials, a group of highly qualified applicants will be selected for interview.
