The Master of Arts in Design program provides the opportunity for advanced independent work within the broadly conceived field of visual studies. The program is small and admission is highly selective, with only a few candidates admitted each year. Students applying should have sufficient studio experience to undertake advanced projects independently. The design program is intended for students who wish to pursue an original creative/research project. This is not the program for students who seek applied professional training in graphic design or illustration. The degree is conferred after completion of a two-to-three semester, 20-unit minimum individualized program of study (worked out with an advisor), an exhibit, and a thesis.

The College of Environmental Design (CED) is the first in the country to bring together the departments of Architecture, City and Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, creating a collaborative and dynamic community of students, scholars, creative designers, and planners concerned with the built environment, in all its complexity. Through instruction, cutting-edge research programs, and in their award-winning design practices, the people of this college work in the forefront of the effort to build more aesthetically, more appropriately, and in ways that ethically balance the multiplicity of human, social, and ecological needs. CED offers students an exceptional array of resources. The college has a world-class environmental design library, a 10.6-acre teaching garden, one of the nation’s leading archives of architectural and landscape plans and drawings, and an extensive slide, photograph, and digital image collection. Students have access to a fabrication shop, computer-aided modeling and manufacturing laboratory, photo laboratory, and environmental simulation laboratory. In addition, two research centers, the Center for Environmental Design Research and the Institute for Urban and Regional Development, offer students opportunities to conduct research and publish scholarly reports and journals. In sum, these resources contribute to a learning environment that places CED among the top five environmental design schools in the nation and among the most distinguished internationally. The college is known for teaching planning and design as disciplines that foster critical thinking, research inquiry, and imaginative design proposals.
