In this Program, Students wants to qualify both in research and in the practical application of engineering and management may earn the M.S. and M.E.M. degrees simultaneously by completing all the requirements of both degrees. At least one month prior to the scheduled M.S. thesis defense, the M.E.M./M.S. candidate submits a petition, endorsed by the thesis advisor, to the faculty for the approval of the Graduate Program Committee. Petition forms are available from the Registrar.

Accredited bachelor's degree in engineering OR bachelor's degree in mathematics or science plus two upper-level courses in engineering. Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not attended and English-speaking undergraduate or graduate institution are required to submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Letter of recommendation are done online. All recommendations MUST be on official letterhead with original signatures. Candidates for the degree acquire: basic competency in applied mathematics and engineering, breadth of engineering knowledge through a range of courses, depth of engineering knowledge through focused research. M.S. students generally hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or one of the physical sciences. Core courses are designated in the graduate-level course descriptions in the Thayer School bulletin or online at: Courses taken previously, e.g., as an undergraduate, can be used in satisfaction of this requirement, but do not reduce the total number of courses required unless admission is with advanced standing.
