This is an interdisciplinary degree involves the identification, modeling, analysis, architecture, integration, and management of complex systems and processes. Systems engineering applies to many types of systems - large systems such as power plants, small systems such as circuit components, or computer hardware and software systems. The primary goal of the program is to prepare engineers to develop the next generation of engineering products, systems, and services for industry and government. Students will learn to use and implement key systems engineering concepts that help to increase the effectiveness in the current job and open opportunities to advance their career. The course of study offers experience in system analysis and modeling, MATLAB simulations, project and program management; quality improvement initiatives and creativity and problem solving. The systems engineering graduates have advanced in their careers to become lead engineers, principal engineers, engineering managers, and project managers.

Students need to have completed a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited college or university with credit conditions substantially equivalent to those required by Penn State. Students must usually have a GPA of 3.0 or better if they do not have strong academic credentials. International applicants must hold the equivalent of an American four-year baccalaureate degree. They must have obtained TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum acceptable score of 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with 19 on speaking section for the internet-based test (IBT) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum composite score of 6.5.
