The competencies needed by the secondary school counselor are related to both the unique developmental needs of early adolescence and to the anticipated transition to an adult role beyond the secondary school. The following objectives represent the specific aims of this program: a knowledge of and responsiveness to the goals and objectives of education at the secondary school level, and an understanding of the role and objectives of school counseling within that structure; a knowledge and understanding of one's self as a person and as a counselor, whose behavior with children, adults, and other professionals is guided by a professional code of ethics and by current legal precedent; a recognition of the developmental nature of counseling and the need to accurately assess and maximize each child's cognitive, affective, and social development through individual and group counseling, classroom curricular infusion, and consultation with teachers, parents, and appropriate community groups; the knowledge and skills necessary to all of the functions needed to implement a comprehensive and effective secondary school counseling program; a knowledge of and a working relationship with existing school and community programs, human and technological resources which might be used to meet the special needs of children; a recognition and awareness that secondary school counseling stands clearly as a profession in its own right, and is not a conglomerate of related school disciplines.
