The educational aims of the Center is to assist students in acquiring a sound grounding in an academic discipline or a professional field and in the languages and civilizations of the Middle East. The Center, an interdepartmental, interdisciplinary unit, achieves this objective by helping to plan degree programs for students who intend to use their knowledge of the Middle East in careers in university teaching and research; governmental and non-governmental organizations; business; journalism; and other personal or professional pursuits. Since CMES faculty members have their primary teaching appointments in the social sciences and humanities departments or in the professional schools, the work of the Center is closely linked with the programs of other degree-granting bodies of the University. The Center also brings to the University visiting scholars whose work strengthens and complements that of the regular faculty. In addition, the Center serves as a forum for the open, responsible, and informed exchange of ideas among University of Chicago students, faculty, staff, and members of the outside community on all issues relating to the areas of its interest. In these exchanges, the Center recognizes the centrality of the principles of freedom, civility, and conscience in the presentation of ideas and opinions in all forms of communication and in all programmatic activities.

The University of Chicago is located in a unique residential neighborhood within the city of Chicago Hyde Park. As a graduate student at the University, students may take advantage of the University's large pool of affordable and conveniently located housing in the Hyde Park community. Nearly all of the University's students and over 60 percent of its faculty and staff live in the campus neighborhood. This makes for a very special sense of community and a lively intellectual atmosphere that complements the academic experience. The University owns and operates more than 1,300 apartments throughout the neighborhood for lease to graduate students. A spirit of cooperation, both among the tenants and between landlord and tenant, is the norm in the apartments. The most modern facility available to University of Chicago graduate students, the New Graduate Residence Hall (NGRH) is home to more than 120 students. NGRH is open only during the academic year it is closed during the summer quarter. The three story building is illuminated inside through large windows set in from an overhanging roof. Its spacious lobby has the feel of a luxury apartment building Rooms most of them singles with private bathrooms are well removed from these common areas, and include newer maple wood furniture, carpet, University telephone and internet connections and optional cable television. Students may prepare their own meals in a large common kitchen, which has many stoves and refrigerators and individual dry storage bins. Residents may purchase an optional meal plan to eat at specified campus dining halls . There are conference rooms for group study, a well-equipped exercise room, two music rooms with pianos and wireless access in most common areas. The NGRH is two blocks from the Law School and close to rail and bus lines. Public festivals and concerts are also scheduled on the Midway. The cost of attendance for Room and Board is $11,697.
