This program will provide successful completion of the M.P.H. degree, students will possess core understanding of the fundamental areas of knowledge in public health and obtain professional specialization. The purpose of these degrees is to acquire a broad understanding of the core areas of public health and its related disciplines with particular emphasis in a selected field of study and to integrate and apply this knowledge in addressing public health problems. In addition, M.P.H. students acquire common basic skills and competencies for public health professionals. The School of Public Health objectives listed below will be met through the entire program of study, including the SPH breadth courses. The EHS learning objectives described at the end of this section will be met through the EHS core courses. School of Public Health Objectives for M.P.H. Students: Identify and define parameters of public health problems. Collect data relevant to a public health problem. Demonstrate critical thinking in determining effective use and analysis of data and statistical methods for public health problems as applied, for example, in epidemiology, health management, program planning, program evaluation, and policy analysis. Describe the interrelationships of scientific, economic, political, social, ethical, and personal interplay with public health problems and issues. Demonstrate leadership and communicate public health information, policy, positions, and program justifications effectively in writing and orally. Advocate for public health issues and resources. Demonstrate cultural competence with persons and groups from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrate ethical standards in practice, research, data collection and storage and program management.

Prior to starting a degree program, applicants are expected to have completed a BS degree including one year of biology, one year of general chemistry, and one semester of organic chemistry, and one year of calculus.

Since the School of Public Health's founding in 1943, it has greatly contributed to the improved health and welfare of our communities, the state, and the world. Accomplishments of the School's faculty, alumni, and students include the following: Developed the first international human growth standards. Developed the first vaccine for coccidioidomycosis. Founded the field of health planning in the U.S. Completed the first sequencing of the Chlamydia trachomatis genome. Helped bring about changes in food access, housing, crime, and safety in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. Graduate students, working with low-income elders, formed the award-winning Tenderloin Senior Organizing Project, an organization of tenant associations that has been replicated in the United States and Canada.

Students can live in the home at Cal which will be an important part of their college experience. Any students may apply for residence halls. Virtually all rooms are double and triple occupancy, and the few single rooms are reserved for disabled students or continuing, upper-division students only. The halls are: Clark Kerr Campus, Foothill, Bowles, Stern, Unit 1, Unit 2, TUD Wada Apartments and Unit 3. Residents make a pact with their peers to keep the community free of smoke, alcohol, and drugs. They plan and host substance-free programming, events, and activities. The Disabled Students' Program (DSP) on campus can assist students with disabilities in securing priority for housing. Some residence hall rooms on the Berkeley campus have been modified for physically disabled, deaf, hard of hearing, and visually impaired students. In order to qualify for priority housing and receive the appropriate accommodations, students must provide DSP with verification of their disabilities. In addition there are upper division undergraduate apartment advising: Channing-Bowditch Apartments in which 226 students and 3 staff will live-in. It is for single gender with 4 bedroom or 2 bedroom and townhouse apartments. Wada Apartments in which 175 students and 1 staff will live in. It is for double and triple single gender apartments; and its only for academic year contracts; these are on the same schedule as Residence Halls.
