This is a post professional degree that offers a research program to candidates who hold a professional degree in architecture, or degree holders who desire to develop expertise in architectural research and scholarship. It is designed for independent research leading to a thesis under the direction of a major professor and thesis committee. It gives students additional credibility in a specific area of architecture, allowing students to gain professional recognition as a specialist. The degree is excellent preparation for a future in academia as a university professor and researcher.

The modules are Arch 510 Graduate Seminar (3 cr), Arch 520 Architectural Research Methods (3 cr), Electives (16 cr), Research Thesis (8 cr).

Students should possess the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor degree. They should have a minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale. International students should have the following acceptable proof of English competency: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 550 on the paper test or 79 on the internet test; IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6.5; MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) with a score of 77; UI American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) with a Level 6 Pass; U.S. Education earned degree at accredited institution or successfully completed upper-level College English composition courses (at the discretion of the Graduate Admissions Office).
