This program teaches students the theory and technology of building systems that can understand, process, and interact with people using speech and language. Students can gain a thorough grounding in all aspects of speech, language and interactive systems, including speech signal processing, automatic speech recognition, text-processing, semantic interpretation, dialogue management, speech synthesis, and human-computer interaction. Students will learn both the theory behind how speech and language is processed, and will gain practical experience in building algorithms and applications. Students will also gain a solid understanding of machine learning techniques.

Applicants should have either a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or have a strong computer science background. The background should include, at a minimum, undergraduate courses in discrete mathematics, data structures, and statistics (typically sophomore level courses). Students should also be proficient in a modern programming language. Written Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are required for applicants whose native language is not English, except for those who have earned a degree from a US institution. The OGI School of Science and Engineering will accept the paper-based test, computer-based, or internet-based test.
