This program trains students in such a way that they will be competitive in the ever changing market place. Since the emphasis is on training excellent biomedical researchers, the first responsibility is to instill in them a pattern of life-long learning on their own and to be independent, creative investigators. Thus, the breadth of knowledge the student receives is not limited to didactic coursework. Rather the student is engaged in ongoing accrual of knowledge and accomplishments in Microbiology and Immunology through attendance at the weekly departmental seminar, participation in the weekly departmental Research in Progress meeting, participation in other journal clubs and research meetings, and attendance and presentations at national and international meetings.

This program module includes G715 Biomed I - Biomedical Science I - Biochemical Basis of Biological Processes (3 cr), G716 Biomed II - Biomedical Science II - Molecular Biology and Genetics (3 cr), G717 Biomed III - Biomedical Science III - Cellular Basis of Systems Biology or (3 cr), G817 Molecular Basis of Cell Structure and Function (2 cr), Students must take at least 4 cr from the courses shown below: G729 Introduction to Immunological Systems (1 cr), G728 Fundamental Concepts of Infection and Pathogenesis (1 cr), G852 Concepts of Cancer Biology (2 cr), G720 Stem Cell Biology (1 cr), J807 Current Topics in Immunology (2 cr), J829 Current Topics in Microorganisms (2 cr), J842 Neoplastic Determinants (2 cr), Plus J802 Introduction to Research (2-8 week rotations:one fall, one spring) (2 cr), G655 Skills - Research Communications Seminar (1 cr), G855 Skills - Experimental Design and Biostatistics (1 cr), G505 Responsible Conduct of Research (1 cr), J810 Thesis Research (16 cr).

Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree (equivalent to U.S) with a minimum 16 years of primary plus secondary plus tertiary education and have earned a university first degree, or have completed a university first degree that grants eligibility for graduate study in a recognized university in that same country and GRE score of 779 in quantitative, 89 per cent in quantitative percentile, 567 in verbal, 76 per cent in verbal percentile, 4.0 in analytical and 37 per cent in analytical percentile. All applicants must take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in order to be considered for admissions. International applicants must have a permanent resident visa and a minimum TOEFL score of 628 (paper-based version), 267 (computer-based version), 113 (Internet-based version) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 112. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken.
