This program teaches students the theory and technology of building systems that can understand, process, and interact with people using speech and language. Students can gain a thorough grounding in all aspects of speech, language and interactive systems, including speech signal processing, automatic speech recognition, text-processing, semantic interpretation, dialogue management, speech synthesis, and human-computer interaction. Students will learn both the theory behind how speech and language is processed, and will gain practical experience in building algorithms and applications. Students will also gain a solid understanding of machine learning techniques.

Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Students with bachelor's degrees in other branches of engineering, the sciences, or in mathematics will also be considered. Students should be familiar with multivariate calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, complex variables, and probability. Written Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are required for applicants whose native language is not English, except for those who have earned a degree from a US institution. The OGI School of Science and Engineering will accept the paper-based test, computer-based, or internet-based test.
