This program mission is to provide tools for practicing engineers to more effectively manage technology, people, and information in their careers to ensure economic growth, competitiveness, ethical decision-making, and environmentally responsible behavior.

Students should have completed an undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline. However, an student with a degree in another technical major and a substantial background in engineering may qualify. Such students may be admitted on a case-by-case basis and are asked to submit documentation that substantiates their engineering experience and responsibilities. A minimum 3.00 GPA from an accredited U.S. institution or foreign equivalent is preferred. International students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 80.

The University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering proudly prepares graduates to succeed in industrial careers. The Department offers four degrees, the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE), the Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM), and the Master of Environmental Health and Safety (MEHS). The UMD Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) will be internationally recognized as the premier engineering department in the Great Lakes Region for its high quality undergraduate education, applied masters' level programs in environmental health and safety and engineering management, integrated outreach activities in regional economic development, international partnerships, and applied research; thus enabling the growth of the students, faculty, alumni, industry, and economy.

The Office of Residence Life believes that campus living is integral to a student's educational experience. The purpose of residence life is to promote community development and personal growth. In choosing to live on campus, a student-resident commits to participate as a positive citizen in an educational community; a community characterized by respect, responsibility and opportunity. A variety of furnished housing is available at UMD for students who wish to live in University residence halls and apartments. The University offers housing to 1,564 students in traditional residence halls and 1,455 students in apartment-style units. Residence Hall rooms are furnished with beds and mattresses, draperies, desks, chairs, drawer space, study lamps, wastebaskets, compact refrigerator, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Almost all rooms in the residence halls are designed for two students. Students living in the residence halls must provide their own bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow cases, blankets and bedspreads). Apartment units are furnished with refrigerator, stove, couch and chair, end table, dining table and chairs, beds and mattresses, desks, chairs, dressers, desk lamps, shower curtain, draperies, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service, and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Students living in the University apartment s must provide their own cooking and eating utensils, wastebaskets, and bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow case, blanket and bedspread). Each apartment is designed for four students.
