The objectives of this program are to enhance understanding of an area of horticultural science beyond the baccalaureate level; and to attain scientific research skills.. Students may specialize in genetics, plant breeding, molecular biology, plant physiology, plant nutrition, marketing and production of horticultural crops, ecology, and post harvest physiology.

All applicants must have received from a regionally accredited institution a baccalaureate degree earned under residence and credit conditions substantially equivalent to those required by Penn State. International applicants must hold the equivalent of an American four-year baccalaureate degree. The language of instruction at Penn State is English. All international applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisional admission, which requires an institutional test of English proficiency upon first enrollment and, if necessary, remedial course work. The minimum composite score for the IELTS is 6.5. Graduate programs may have more stringent requirements. International applicants are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement who have received a baccalaureate or a master's degree from a college/university/institution in any of the following: Australia, Belize, British Caribbean and British West Indies, Canada (except Quebec), England, Guyana, Republic of Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the United States, and Wales.

The Horticulture Research Farm is located approximately 10 miles southwest of University Park at the Rock Springs Agricultural Research Center. Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, and Entomology are the major departments involved at these facilities which also are the site of the annual College of Agriculture’s Ag Progress Days. Several other departments within the College of Agriculture as well as other colleges at Penn State cooperate in the work done at the Research Center. The land for this center was purchased starting in the late 1950’s and has now grown to over 2100 acres. There are 100 research acres at the Hort Farm. It presently has 8 acres of apples, 1.5 acre peaches, 4 acres shade trees and conifers, .5 acres strawberries, 1 acre raspberries, and 0.25 acres of grapes. Approximately 25 acres are utilized annually for small-plot research crops. The remaining acreage involves the crop rotation crops, wheat, red clover, buckwheat, soybeans, sweet corn and field corn.

The University Park campus features seven dining commons, a great coffeehouse, six snack bars, and more - all conveniently located in or near the residence hall areas. Plus, Union Street Marketplace (HUB-Robeson Center), Otto's Café (Kern Graduate Building), and Café Laura (Mateer) offer a complete array of restaurant dining. Residence Life: The mission of Residence Life is to provide a safe, comfortable, secure, and nurturing living-learning environment that is conducive to students' academic pursuits and personal growth while fostering a sense of community, civic responsibility, and an appreciation of diversity. Housing: At all of its residential campuses, University housing is held in high regard. Through the residence system, the University provides convenience, high value, security, and a wide scope of programs and services designed specifically to help students succeed. Most undergraduate students live in North, South, East, West, or Pollock Halls; Eastview Terrace; or Nittany Apartments. Undergraduate students with families may apply to live in White Course Apartments. Single graduate students and students with families are eligible to apply for housing at White Course Apartments. Postdoctoral students are not eligible for on-campus housing. Students who live in White Course Apartments may purchase an A-La Board meal plan.
