This 45-hour, Early Admissions Program for University of Rochester Undergraduates is designed to prepare students to enter highly competitive doctoral programs in education, psychology, and related fields. In addition to offering courses providing a broad understanding of issues in human development, this course of studies emphasizes extensive experience and training in research in psychological development. It is also designed to permit maximum flexibility to allow you to draw widely from the resources of the University to develop your area of interest and expertise.

I. Master's Core (9 credits): ED 406 Master’s Research Methods; ED 429 Theories of Human Development; ED 419 Life Course Studies. II. Specialization Courses (9 credits): In consultation with their advisors, students may select from a wide array of human development courses offered throughout the university. The courses available through the Warner School include the following: ED 403 Disability and Early Childhood; ED 447 Disability and Schools; EDU 467 Language, Literacy, Cognitive Development; EDU 464 Child Development and Learning in Context (5 to 12 years); ED 415 Adolescent Development and Youth Culture; ED 425 Minority Youth Development in Urban Contexts; ED 494 Human Development in Old Age. III. Research Apprenticeship (9 hours): Field study experiences involve three apprenticeships on research projects directed by faculty or advanced doctoral students. No more than two apprenticeships may be served with the same sponsor. IV. Electives (18 credits): Possible courses include, but are not limited to: EDU 565 Research in Life Course Studies; ED 418 The Family and Social Dynamics; ED 457 Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Educational Issues; EDU 405 Policy and Practice in Developmental Differences; EDU 439 Interpersonal Systems in Counseling and Human Development; ED 483 Communication and Counseling Skills for Teachers, Administrators, and Other Helping Professionals; EDU 453 Counseling and Facilitating in Small Groups; EDU 470 Multicultural Perspectives in Counseling; EDU 471 Counselor as Systems Consultant; ED 520 Introduction to Program Evaluation; One course in Educational Leadership; One course in Policy; One course in Grant Writing; A Research Apprenticeship.

Applicants should have received a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or equivalent by the time they enter the program. Applicants should have the ability to do graduate work at the University of Rochester, as demonstrated by their past academic performance, writing skills and computer literacy. Applicants' career goals, objectives, and attitudes should be consistent with the Warner School counseling program to which they are applying and the stated mission of the program. Applicants should demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills and sufficient maturity to serve students and clients well in counseling settings. November, February, and April applicants must attend an Admissions Day event (which includes an interview). Applicants should demonstrate openness to self-examination and personal and professional self-development. The Department of Counseling and Human Development welcomes applications from qualified applicants representing a wide diversity of backgrounds. Warner places great emphasis on making the admission process fair for all students and students with special needs may want to "self-identify" during the interview process. Upon appropriate evaluation, students' needs can be taken into consideration and accommodated.
