This program provides both substantive knowledge and practical experience through a carefully selected sequence of academic study, clinical practice, and research training. Students are prepared for a professional career in diagnosis and management of individuals with speech and language disorders. The typical master’s degree program for a student with a background in communication disorders ranges from 42 to 51 credits and requires a minimum of four semesters and one summer. Students with undergraduate majors other than communication disorders need additional coursework. During the final semester, all students must pass a comprehensive examination or complete a master’s thesis.

Students should have completed either a phone or in-person interview before being admitted. They should have earned a bachelor's degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester credits of their undergraduate degree. If students have a master's or a doctoral degree, a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their graduate work is required. In addition, students are required to obtain a combined score of 800 in the verbal and quantitative sections on the Graduate Record Examination taken within the last 5 years. International students must have graduated from colleges or universities that are recognized by the national educational authorities of their home countries. Students from Canada need to have a three-year bachelor's degree from Quebec or a four-year bachelor's degree from the other provinces. Students from Latin America should have a university degree requiring four years of study. Students from France and other countries following the French system must have a degree or diploma requiring four years of study after the baccalaureate (usually the maitrise). Students from Germany must have completed a diploma. Students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal are required to have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in any other field. Students from other Asian and European countries need to have a university degree requiring four years of study. Students from United Kingdom and countries following the British pattern should possess a bachelor's degree with honors. International students must have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 105 or higher on the internet-based exam.
