The Master of Arts in Lay Ministries degree is designed for those pursuing careers in church ministry in the Catholic tradition. This 35-credit program will enhance or advance your career in such positions as parish catechetical and youth ministry directors, pastoral associates, campus ministries, health care ministries, correctional ministries, and Catholic school teachers and administrators. The M.A. in Lay Ministries is a formation program based on the guidelines for lay ecclesial ministers as described in the United States Catholic Bishops’ document, "Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord." The professional development seminar is taken in the first semester of the program and is designed to assess a student’s personal, spiritual and academic readiness for graduate studies and to assist in planning for personal and career development. The Religious Studies Department also provides MALM students opportunities for theological reflection and spiritual direction.

The minimum admission requirements are: a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 system, At least 12 undergraduate credits in religious studies or equivalent competencies. A letter of endorsement from the pastor or parish director of students parish. An interview with the chair of the Religious Studies Department. A statement of purpose (2-3 double-spaced pages) describing the reasons for seeking a graduate degree in religious studies. This essay should consist of their qualifications, past academic and employment history relevant to the MALM degree program, expectations for graduate studies and professional goals. Non-native English speakers must submit scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students who are not able to access the TOEFL may be allowed to submit scores from another testing mechanism (ACT, SAT, GMAT, ASSET). This will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Japanese students may submit STEP as an alternative to the TOEFL.
