The University of California was chartered in 1868 and its flagship campus - envisioned as a "City of Learning" - was established at Berkeley, on San Francisco Bay. Today the world's premier public university and a wellspring of innovation, UC Berkeley occupies a 1,232 acre campus with a sylvan 178-acre central core. From this home its academic community makes key contributions to the economic and social well-being of the Bay Area, California, and the nation. This California institution became a catalyst of economic growth and social innovation - the place where vitamin E was discovered, a lost Scarlatti opera found, the flu virus identified, and the nation's first no-fault divorce law drafted. Scholars at Berkeley have conducted groundbreaking research on urban street gangs and on basic human nutritional requirements, identified why wartime supply ships were failing at sea, invented technologies to build faster and cheaper computer chips, and imaged the infant universe. Students can live in the home at Cal which will be an important part of their college experience. Any students may apply for residence halls. Virtually all rooms are double and triple occupancy, and the few single rooms are reserved for disabled students or continuing, upper-division students only. The halls are: Clark Kerr Campus, Foothill, Bowles, Stern, Unit 1, Unit 2, TUD Wada Apartments and Unit 3. Residents make a pact with their peers to keep the community free of smoke, alcohol, and drugs. They plan and host substance-free programming, events, and activities. The Disabled Students' Program (DSP) on campus can assist students with disabilities in securing priority for housing. Some residence hall rooms on the Berkeley campus have been modified for physically disabled, deaf, hard of hearing, and visually impaired students. In order to qualify for priority housing and receive the appropriate accommodations, students must provide DSP with verification of their disabilities. In addition there are upper division undergraduate apartment advising: Channing-Bowditch Apartments in which 226 students and 3 staff will live-in. It is for single gender with 4 bedroom or 2 bedroom and townhouse apartments. Wada Apartments in which 175 students and 1 staff will live in. It is for double and triple single gender apartments; and its only for academic year contracts; these are on the same schedule as Residence Halls.
