This program encourages students to explore both the specificity and the diversity of race and ethnicity in American culture by taking some courses that focus on the experience of one racial or ethnic group and others that offer comparative perspectives. Students can choose from a wide range of course offerings from multiple disciplines, exploring such topics as the history of creative accomplishment, the historic and contemporary differences among modes of cultural expression, processes of assimilation and rejection, the concept of the diaspora and its association with identity, and the complex relationship between race-ethnicity and other markers of identity such as gender, religion, sexuality and class.

The modules are AMS 200 or one from the U.S. History sequence HST 181/182/183 (or AP American History credit), AMS 211 American Experience I (winter), AMS 213 American Experience II (spring), AMS 215 American Experience III (autumn), During their senior year: AMS 301 Senior Seminar Capstone (autumn), AMS 150 Perspectives on America, AMS 220 American Buddhism: Race and Religious Diversity, AMS 230 Asian American Histories, AMS 260 Three Cultures of Early America, AMS 261 American Ethnicities, 1800-1945, AMS 265 Pacific World: North America and the Pacific, 1776-1945, AMS 395 Topics in American Studies.

Applicants should have completed or are about to complete their secondary school education (high school) and have not taken any college or university coursework after finishing their secondary education. Applicants educated outside the US, regardless of their legal status, should have a proof of English proficiency. Applicants can prove their English proficiency by submitting any of the tests below: minimum TOEFL score of 80, no section lower than 17 (internet based), 213 (computer-based) or 550 (paper based); minimum IELTS score of 6.5; minimum SAT verbal score of 500; minimum ACT score of 18 on the reading section, and 20 on the English section and a minimum Pearson Test of English Academic score of 53.
