Students should have a certificate representing 12 years of academic education with an equivalent of first division achievement in senior secondary school is required for freshman application. Consideration for transfer admission requires official, externally-issued university mark sheets with First Division achievement for each year of study. The University of Michigan requires a high level of proficiency in English, so that all students are able to participate fully in University life, both in and out of class. The University accepts the results of the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the International English Testing System (IELTS). In general, minimum acceptable scores are in the 80-85 range on the MELAB, with section scores of at least 80; in the 570-610 range on the paper-Based TOEFL (PBT), with section scores of at least 57; in the 230-250 range on the computer-Based TOEFL (CBT), with section scores of at least 23; or in the 88-106 range on the new internet-based TOEFL (iBT), with section scores of at least 23 in listening, speaking, and reading, and at least 21 in writing. The IELTS is also acceptable with scores in the 6.5-7.0 range, with section scores of at least 6.5. Applicants from outside of the U.S. are strongly encouraged to take the SAT because the new writing component of the ACT is not currently offered outside of the U.S.

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) is a center for the exploration of the humanities of Asia, where students are invited to cross the boundaries of nations (including China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Korea) and of disciplines (including literature, film, language, religion, and history) in order develop two vital qualities: a deep local knowledge and a broad global perspective. The department offers instruction in the cultures of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia, and in many of the languages of Asia (including Bengali, Chinese, Filipino, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Javanese, Korean, Pali, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Thai, Tibetan, Urdu, and Vietnamese) so that the students may be enriched by the treasures of the past and participate in the conversations of the future.

University Housing provides a vast array of services, and the quality is the best. University Housing’s residence halls are located in three neighborhoods on these campuses: North, Central and Hill. The University of Michigan offers apartments to single graduate students and students with families as part of one of the largest and most comprehensive campus-operated apartment programs in the country. Northwood Community Apartments consists of 1089 apartments in Northwood I, II, IV and V, located on North Campus. Units include apartments ranging from efficiencies to 3 bedroom units. Utilities and DSL are included in the monthly rent, except for long distance telephone charges and cable charges. Undergraduate students mostly accommodated in Northwood III apartments. It consists of 21 brick and wood buildings, 392 apartments which can house at least 536 upper class students. Northwood III apartments are heated by steam heat. There are 4 laundry facilities (Blue Bucks compatible) within the complexes. Northwood III has laminate flooring and each apartment has DSL capability. They have 5 different occupancy options for students to choose from: economy 1 bedroom (1 person only), 1 bedroom with 1 person, 1 bedroom with 2 people, 2 bedrooms with 2 people, 2 bedrooms with 3 people, No security deposit, All utilities are included in the rate: heat, water, electric, and local phone service, High speed data connectivity included as part of the Housing technology fee, Semi-furnished, Laminate flooring (no carpet), Available parking, UM and AATA bus service readily available, Cable tv at reduced rate, On-site laundry (Blue Bucks compatible), 24-hour maintenance (FIX-IT), Security, Community center, Picnic/BBQ area.
