The dance major will help students develop in several areas: technical proficiency, historical and cultural perspectives, personal artistry, and production skills. The major will also provide students with an understanding of how dance fits into a larger global context through courses in dance history, global perspectives on dance, and contemporary dance techniques. Students in the major will learn the behind-the-scenes process of putting a show together in a technical theatre class and will get the opportunity to develop their own unique voice as artists in choreography and dance composition courses. The dance major prepares graduates for careers in dance performance, choreography, dance education, and advanced study in a graduate program.

The modules include DANC 1500 Contemporary Dance Techniques, DANC 3200 Dance History, THEA 2060 Technical Theatre, DANC 2100 Dance Lab (1 credit each, must be taken 4 times), DANC 3500 Global Dance Perspectives, DANC 4000 Dance Composition, DANC 4300 Dance Choreography, DANC 4500 Dance Improvisation, DANC 1200 Ballet I, DANC 1400 Jazz Dance I, DANC 1600 Modern Dance I, DANC 2200 Ballet II, DANC 2400 Jazz Dance II, DANC 2600 Modern Dance II, DANC 3000 African Dance, DANC 3300 Latin and Caribbean Dance, DANC 3600 Modern Dance III.

Students who have earned CXC or O level certificates (HSC and CAPE) must provide five passing scores in academic subjects and proof of secondary school completion. Students for whom English is not their native language must be able to demonstrate adequate English skills by submitting one of the following: Proof of graduation from a U.S. regionally-accredited high school, Proof of English language proficiency with either a passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 213 on the computer-based test; 550 on the paper-based test, an internet score of 79/80 or a passing score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS*)--6.0 on the test module, SAT verbal score of 480 or above, or ACT verbal score of 20, College transcript with one "English Composition One" course at a U.S. regionally-accredited college with a grade of C or better.
