The Department's undergraduate program in Genetics and Plant Biology emphasizes the study of plants from the molecular genetic to the organismal levels. Lower division courses provide a foundation in biological and physical sciences as preparation for upper division study. Most courses offer laboratory classes that focus further on the subject matter and introduce students to the latest techniques in genetics and plant biology. The Genetics and Plant Biology major is very flexible. It mimics the requirements for Med-School and other health science professional schools while also preparing students for graduate school in a number of fields. And if they want to work right after school, they'll find the opportunities to work in a laboratory and the challenging courses will be invaluable on their resume. The major also allows them a plenty of unit room (25-28) to take courses from all over campus that interest students. So if they have interest in English or Music or Economics or Languages or even another science program, the Genetics and Plant Biology major and its advisers encourage them to pursue the diverse education they desire. Many of the students also study abroad for a semester and even a year (with good planning).

Applicants should complete the ACT Assessment plus Writing Test or the SAT Reasoning Test. In addition, all applicants must complete two SAT Subject Tests in different subject areas selected from history, literature, mathematics (Math Level 2 only), science or a language other than English. Students who are California resident with a GPA of 3.0 or above in the required courses, must achieve the test score total indicated in the University’s Freshman Eligibility Index. Nonresidents must attain a minimum 3.4 GPA in the A - G courses and the test score total indicated in the Eligibility Index under Non-California Residents, or meet eligibility requirements by examination alone.
