This program is designed to serve the needs of those students for whom a thorough knowledge of the Ibero-American world, its peoples, and its cultural, political and social history will further their educational and professional development. It consists of 39 credits, 24 in language and literature and 15 drawn from appropriate courses offered by participating departments such as history, political science, anthropology, and sociology.

Students will have their courses in 12 credits in the following courses: 6 credits in 21:940:205, 206, 207 Introduction to Spanish Literature, 21:940:208 Introduction to Latin American Literature, or higher-level Spanish literature courses; 21:940:341,342 Hispanic Civilization. 12 credits in other Spanish (language and literature) courses at or above the 200 level, except 21:940:311,312 Spanish Literature in English Translation and 21:940:343,344 Latin American Literature in English Translation.15 credits chosen by the student in consultation with the Spanish adviser.

Students must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma with required GPA. Regardless of US residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students whose secondary schooling has been outside the US in a country where English is not the principal language. Students who have achieved a grade of B or better in a college-level English Composition course in residence at an accredited US college are exempt from this requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, non-native, or which require a special support component, as well as courses taken outside the US, is not acceptable. A score of 6 or higher is acceptable for our Newark campus in IELTS. Acceptable scores for all schools except the College of Nursing are 550+ on the paper and pencil test or 79+ on the Internet-based test. For College of Nursing applicants, the acceptable scores are 600+ on the paper and pencil test or 100+ on the Internet-based test.
