School of Arts and Humanities was established as a part of the University of Texas at Dallas in 1975. From then until 1990 UTD was an “upper level institution” that served juniors, seniors, and graduate students. In 1990, an act of the Texas Legislature expanded UTD to a four-year university, adding freshmen and sophomores to the student population. Since 1975, the school has awarded more than 2,779 baccalaureate, 368 master’s and 123 doctoral degrees. In 2002-03 approximately 500 undergraduates had declared a major in the school, and more than 200 students were enrolled in one of the graduate degree programs. During the past five years enrollments in courses offered by the school have been growing at an annual rate of almost 15%.

In accordance with University policy, all freshmen who choose to live on campus are required to live in either University Village or in the new suite-style 400-bed residence hall, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009. Applications for on-campus housing are distributed and accepted only after a student has been admitted to the University. To ensure accurate processing, all application packets need to be returned with appropriate fees which include $35 application fee, $100 security deposit (used for excessive wear and damages to apartment). The current rental rate for the freshman apartments is $426 per person per month. This rate includes electric, water, sewage, garbage collection internet and cable television service. Beginning in Fall 2008, there will be a cable television and Ethernet outlet in each bedroom and living room with accompanying service. Other services, such as phone service, are optional. No meal plan is offered, but students may purchase individual meals at the food services located in the Student Union. Students may use their on-campus Comet Card (Student ID) account (UTDollars), cash or credit to purchase meals.
