The goal of the counseling program is to prepare students to work in a variety of human service settings. Graduates are personally effective, professionally skilled, and are prepared for employment in their area of specialization. The counseling program at Oakland University's School of Education and Human Services is dedicated to educating and preparing individuals to work as professional counselors with children, youth and adults in school or community settings. The curriculum is designed to encourage both personal and professional development of students. Initial courses introduce theoretical and professional components of counseling. Later courses emphasize research and clinical counseling skills. Students are supervised as they apply their knowledge in clinical courses that use on-campus laboratory facilities and approved field training sites. Degree Requirements: At least 48 graduate-level credits are required for Oakland University's Master's degree in Counseling. Admitted students may select an emphasis in either school counseling or community counseling. All classes will be held on the University Center campus with two exceptions; two laboratory courses (CNS 661 and CNS 664) will be held on the Oakland University campus. Up to nine (9) graduate credits may be transferred from other accredited universities. The University Center program is cohort based and allows completion of the degree in two years plus one semester. Students are admitted in the fall only and the deadline for application is April 15.

The University Center partnership program is a unique plan devised by Macomb Community College. Since 1991, the program has been offered in partnership with four-year colleges and universities providing Macomb County residents increased access to advanced education through a mix of bachelor's and master's degree programs. This partnership is an alternative to "going away" to college or attending an isolated extension center. Through participation in any one of its academic programs, students receive their final two years of instruction at the University Center for their bachelor's degree, or may also attend classes for a master's degree. The University Center is one of only a few educational facilities of its kind in the country. Macomb Community College maintains the buildings, while Oakland University, and the other partner institutions, provide the curriculum and faculty. For more information on the partnership programs, visit www.macomb.edu.

Students living in the residence halls must select a meal plan, which is included in the total cost for room and board. Each plan gives students the opportunity to eat at any of the dining locations on campus. Room and board for residence hall students costs $3,550.00 per semester for a double room or $3,995.00 per semester for a single room. This housing office is located on the 4th floor (ground floor) of Hamlin Hall.
