The purpose of the Master of Arts degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice is to provide education in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a special emphasis on: preparing students for the doctoral degree, teaching at the college or university level, research, statistics, and planning in the university or any federal, state, or local criminal justice agency dealing with the prevention, control, and/or correctionalization of crime and delinquency. The student's attention is specifically directed to the section of "Preparation of Theses" and "Steps in Preparation of Theses" in the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Compliance with these requirements is the student's responsibility.

Completion of the following 21 hours of course work in the Department: CRIM 520 (3 hours) - Criminal Law and Procedure I, CRIM 601 (3 hours) - Seminar: Criminological Theories, CRIM 606 (3 hours) - Seminar: Research in Criminology, CRIM 607 (3 hours) - Seminar: Law and Society, CRIM 698 (3 hours) - Internship in Criminology, CRIM 699 (6 hours) – Master’s Thesis. 6 hours of the 33 total hours will be taken from the following electives: CRIM 602 (3 hours) - Correctional Counseling, CRIM 603 (3 hours) - Correctional Group Therapy, CRIM 604 (3 hours) - Seminar: Police Problems and Practices, CRIM 605 (3 hours) - Correctional Administration or such other electives as approved

Student must have an undergraduate G.P.A. of 2.75 and be recommended for admission by the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Students applying for admission to the M.A. degree program in Criminology and Criminal Justice must also have completed the following undergraduate courses or their equivalents (18 hours total): Criminology (CRIM 200) -- 3 hours, Juvenile Delinquency (CRIM 423) -- 3 hours, courses in Sociology, Psychology, Political Science -- 12 hours.
