Students in the ESL concentration follow an integrated program of study that helps them develop expertise in the many areas included in ESL: second language acquisition, cross-cultural issues, language policy and planning, and second/foreign language instruction. Besides developing skills in analyzing language, assessing language ability, and planning language instruction, students apply their knowledge through internships in the U.S. and in other countries.

Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. International students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by obtaining minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 210 (computer-based). A satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination (typically a score of 450 on the verbal section) is also required for admission.
